The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sponsored and promoted studies that showed positive outcomes of varicella vaccination but opposed — and attempted to block — publication of findings that were critical of the varicella vaccination program.

The CDC published and promoted studies on the incidence of herpes zoster (shingles) that had serious methodological limitations.

Serious adverse events after varicella vaccination contribute to offsetting the benefits of varicella vaccination.

As varicella vaccination rates increase, the vaccine becomes less effective against chickenpox, and shingles cases rise. This is due to a reduction in opportunities for natural boosts to immunity (exogenous boosts) which occur from exposure to people who are shedding the natural or wild varicella virus.

Varicella vaccination cost-benefit analyses that were used to justify initiating a national vaccination program disregarded the significance of a) exogenous boosting, b) morbidity from serious adverse reactions to varicella vaccination, and c) morbidity from increasing cases of herpes zoster among adults.

The varicella vaccination program has proven to be neither effective nor cost-effective.
